What does AQI mean in weather

I keep seeing the AQI number on my phone every time I check the weather forecast but I never really understood what it actually means. I know it has something to do with air quality but the number changes so often that it confuses me. Sometimes the weather looks clear but the AQI still shows a high level. Other times the sky looks hazy but the number is lower. I want to understand what AQI means in weather reports and why it matters. Does the AQI affect daily health or is it something only sensitive people should worry about. I also wonder how the number is calculated because the scale seems very specific. If anyone can explain it in simple words I would appreciate it. :sun_behind_small_cloud:

AQI stands for Air Quality Index and it is basically a score that tells you how clean or polluted the air is at a certain time. Weather apps show it because the condition of the air affects daily life just like temperature or humidity. A low AQI means the air is safe and a high AQI means the air can irritate your eyes and lungs. It is easy to understand once you know the scale.

The AQI number comes from measuring pollutants like PM2.5 PM10 ozone and nitrogen dioxide. These tiny particles and gases come from traffic dust burning waste and factories. The weather affects how these pollutants move so some days the number jumps even if you do not see visible pollution. If the air is trapped near the ground the AQI gets worse.

When the weather shows AQI it simply means the air quality is part of the daily forecast. Just like you check the chance of rain you can check whether the air will feel clean or heavy. I used to ignore it but once I understood the meaning I started planning my walks around the AQI. It makes a big difference for breathing comfort.

That makes sense. I should start checking it more often.

A lot of people think AQI is only for people with asthma or allergies but it affects everyone. High AQI can make you feel tired or cause headaches. Even healthy people feel the effect when the number crosses the unhealthy level. So the weather apps show it to help people avoid long outdoor time when the air is bad.

The number is on a simple scale from good to hazardous. Zero to fifty is good fifty to one hundred is moderate and anything beyond that starts affecting health. When you check the weather the app uses colors to help you understand. Green is good yellow is moderate and red means unhealthy. Once you remember the colors it becomes easy.

Most people notice the AQI more in winter because cold air traps pollution near the surface. Even if the sky looks clear the pollution stays low. This makes the number rise even when nothing serious looks wrong outside. Weather patterns change everything and that is why AQI is a weather feature now.

The winter explanation helps a lot. Thank you.

The AQI reading updates every hour because pollution levels change quickly. Morning traffic raises it and afternoon winds lower it. Weather apps show it in real time so people can adjust plans. I find it useful because it tells me whether I should open the windows or keep them closed.

Some apps also show AQI forecasts. They predict how the air will behave based on wind speed temperature and pollution sources. It works like predicting rain. I like this feature because I can avoid outdoor exercise on bad days. AQI is now a major part of weather forecasting in many countries.
