I just brought home my new Levoit Core 600S and I have no real experience using an air purifier before so I am looking for the best setup and daily operating advice. Should I leave it running 24 hours a day or just run it when I am in the room? I live in a dusty area of Houston and want the most effective way to clean the air without needlessly burning through expensive filters faster than necessary. Also what is the most strategic spot to put the unit in a large open living room is it better near a wall or out in the open? Any essential maintenance tips for a total beginner like myself would be greatly appreciated so I can maximize its performance and filter life.
The consensus among long-time users is that you absolutely should run it 24 hours a day especially in a dusty environment like Houston. Particles are constantly being generated by walking sitting and outside air leaks so consistent cleaning on a low setting is much more effective and filter-friendly than trying to blast the air clean on a high setting after the dust has already settled.
Never place the air purifier directly against a wall or tuck it away in a corner behind furniture. These purifiers need 360 degree clearance around the air intake vents to operate efficiently. Place it in the most central and open part of the room you are cleaning where it can draw air from all sides for maximum effectiveness.
When you first unbox it the most critical step is removing the plastic wrapping from the HEPA filter inside the unit. Failure to do this is the most common new user mistake and it will not clean the air at all. Run it on the highest setting for the first thirty minutes to quickly cycle the entire room volume then switch it to Auto mode.
For daily use Auto mode is your friend for filter longevity. The machine uses its sensor to monitor the particulate level and only ramps up the fan when needed. This saves wear and tear on the filter compared to you manually running it constantly on a medium or high setting when the air is already clean.
If you are using the purifier in a specific bedroom make sure you shut the door and close the windows while it is running. The purifier is rated for a specific area size and isolating that space allows the machine to achieve the necessary Air Changes Per Hour or ACH rating for proper cleaning.
Vacuuming the external pre-filter mesh on the outside of the unit every two to three weeks is non-negotiable maintenance. This removes the large hair and dust clumps and keeps the airflow totally unobstructed which prevents the motor from straining and the main HEPA filter from clogging prematurely.
